About Hatch Public Library

Deena Nichole Hatch was born May 27, 1984, in Mauston, Wisconsin, the daughter of William G. and Sandra Hatch, and the younger sister of Jason M. Hatch. She spent her early life in Mauston but moved with her family to a new home located on the family cranberry marsh north of Necedah in the Fall of 1990.   

Deena’s beautiful smile was contagious and generously shared with all, thus bringing her unique spirit of love and laughter wherever she went. Deena’s striking outward beauty was just a reflection of her inner beauty. She always found the time to help those in need, whether it was a classmate, friend, neighbor or even a stranger, with a warm word of encouragement, an act of kindness, and, always, that endearing smile. 

Deena attended the Necedah Schools and was a gifted student, athlete, and leader. Deena loved life and fully embraced each moment, while striving for excellence in all she did, whether it was in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, on an athletic court, or helping the family, especially her dad, on the cranberry marsh. Deena was an outstanding role model in every way. Her leadership abilities inspired others to strive to higher levels.

On the afternoon of February 19, 1998, Deena died tragically as a result of an automobile accident near her home. She lived only 13½ years, but the lives she touched were touched forever. 

In 1999, when the Mauston community was raising awareness for the upcoming fund drive to build the new public library, Deena’s grandparents, William H. and Jean Hatch, longtime residents of Mauston, stepped forward to make the kickoff donation to the library building fund in the sum of $1 Million, as a fitting and living tribute to their granddaughter, Deena N. Hatch.
